The tower, with its intricate design and robust stonework, offers a glimpse into the architectural styles that have influenced Rothenburg over the centuries. Visitors are encouraged to explore the area surrounding Markus Tower, where the quaint cobblestone streets and beautifully maintained buildings create an atmosphere steeped in history.. The tower, built around 1200, was used as a prison until 1844, and you can still find remains of the old pillory at the tower’s south side. The “Röderbogen”, an elevated extension of the wall-walk and presumably part of a former, mightier gate and building with portcullis and a drawbridge, was erected around 1560.
